US Civil War Burnside 2nd Model Cavalry Carbine
The U.S. Civil War Burnside 2nd Model Cavalry Carbine represents a significant chapter in American firearms history.
This single-shot, breech-loading carbine, chambered in .54 caliber, was a product of the innovative – and sometimes controversial – mind of Ambrose Burnside.
Produced from 1860 to early 1862, the 2nd Model Burnside carbine featured a unique brass cartridge and a simplified breechblock mechanism designed by George P. Foster. Despite some shortcomings, over 55,000 were manufactured, making it the third most common carbine used by Union cavalry during the Civil War.
