The WW2 US M1 Front Seam Fixed Bale Steel Helmet is a standard issue combat helmet used by American military forces during the Second World War. Introduced in 1941, the M1 helmet replaced the earlier M1917 model and became an iconic piece of military equipment throughout the conflict. This version features a seam at the front of the helmet shell, a characteristic of early wartime production. The fixed bales on either side are designed to hold the chinstrap in place, a feature later replaced by swivel bales in subsequent models. The helmet consists of a steel outer shell and would originally have included a separate, adjustable liner for added comfort and protection. The M1 helmet’s design offered improved ballistic protection and wearer comfort compared to its predecessors. Front seam, fixed bale examples are sought after for their association with early combat operations and represent a significant development in military headgear.
