The WW2 Russian Soviet SSh-40 Steel Helmet was the standard combat helmet used by Soviet armed forces from 1940 onward. Designed as an improvement over previous models, it features a deep, rounded shape with a distinctive flared rim, providing increased protection to the wearer’s head and neck. The helmet is constructed from steel and typically painted in matte green or gray for camouflage. Notable characteristics include a simplified three-rivet liner system, which was more efficient to manufacture and offered greater comfort for soldiers. The leather or oilcloth liner and fabric chinstrap are designed for a secure fit during active combat. The SSh-40 became one of the most widely used helmets of the Second World War and remained in service with various Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces for several decades after the war. Its robust build and historical significance make it an important artifact from the era of World War II.
