The WW2 German Mothers Cross in Gold, officially known as the Cross of Honour of the German Mother (Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter), was instituted by the German government on 16 December 1938. This civilian decoration recognized women for exceptional merit in childbearing and motherhood. The award consists of a blue-enamelled Maltese cross with white borders, featuring a central medallion with a black swastika and the inscription “DER DEUTSCHEN MUTTER.” The Gold class was conferred upon mothers with eight or more children. The cross is suspended from a blue and white striped ribbon intended to be worn around the neck. Measuring approximately 45mm in height, the medal was accompanied by an official certificate. This decoration is significant as a symbol of the era’s social policies and family-oriented propaganda. The example offered here features period-correct design and detailing typical of original manufacture during 1938-1945.
