The WW2 German Mothers Cross in Bronze, officially known as the Cross of Honour of the German Mother (Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter), was instituted by the Nazi government on 16 December 1938. The award was presented in three classes—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—based on the number of children a mother had. The Bronze class was awarded to mothers with four or five children. The decoration features a blue and white enamel Maltese cross with a central medallion displaying a black swastika surrounded by the words “Der Deutschen Mutter” (“To the German Mother”). The cross is suspended from a blue and white ribbon. Approximately three million Mothers Crosses in Bronze were awarded during the Third Reich era. This medal was part of a policy to promote large families and was accompanied by a certificate and, in some cases, a signing by high-ranking officials. The Bronze Mothers Cross remains a recognizable relic from the period, often found in militaria collections.
