The WW2 German Eastern Front Medal, also known as the “Ostmedaille,” was instituted on 26 May 1942 to recognize personnel who served on the Eastern Front during the harsh winter campaign of 1941–42. The medal was awarded to both military and civilian members of the Wehrmacht and its auxiliaries, including foreign volunteers, who participated in service under severe conditions or were wounded in action. This example is a full-size original with no maker mark, a characteristic found on some wartime variants. The obverse features the German eagle holding a swastika above a helmet and crossed sword, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The reverse displays the date “1941/42” within a wreath. The medal retains its original loop for suspension. This type of award provides historical insight into the conditions of the Eastern Front and German military recognition practices of the period. Reproducible as a documentary artifact, it appeals to those studying military history and insignia.
