The WW2 German Cross in Gold Cloth was a decoration awarded by Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Introduced in 1941, the German Cross in Gold recognized repeated acts of bravery or military leadership that did not meet the criteria for the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross but were above those for the Iron Cross First Class. This example is the cloth variant, designed for wear on the tunic to provide a more comfortable alternative to the heavier metal version. The badge features a starburst base, typically made with bullion thread, surrounding a black enamel swastika within a red enamel ring. The reverse side generally includes a backing material and a cloth or cardboard stiffener. The Gold grade was distinguished from the Silver version by the color of the wreath and other metallic elements. Due to its construction and manufacturing period, examples in cloth are less common and reflect the practical considerations of front-line personnel.
