The France and Germany Star is a British Commonwealth campaign medal instituted in 1945 to recognize service in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, or Germany between 6 June 1944 and 8 May 1945 during the Second World War. This decoration was awarded to military personnel of the Canadian forces who met the qualifying operational criteria within the designated theatres. The medal takes the form of a six-pointed bronze star, with the royal cypher “GRVI” in the center surmounted by a crown and encircled by the words “THE FRANCE AND GERMANY STAR.” The ribbon features blue, white, and red stripes representing the national colors of the United Kingdom and France. This example includes the Atlantic Bar, denoting additional service in the Atlantic operational area. The bar is a narrow clasp attached to the ribbon, inscribed “ATLANTIC.” Full-size medals such as this were worn on formal occasions by eligible veterans and are collectible items related to Canadian military history.
