The WW2 Canadian RCN Visual Signalman 2nd Class Petty Officer Trade Patch is an original insignia issued to Royal Canadian Navy personnel during the Second World War. This patch signified qualification as a Visual Signalman at the rank of Petty Officer, 2nd Class. Visual Signalmen were responsible for transmitting and receiving messages using visual communication methods, such as semaphore flags, signal lamps, and flags, which were vital for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication during naval operations. The patch typically features a white or off-white embroidered design on a dark blue wool backing, incorporating traditional naval iconography such as crossed signal flags. It would have been worn on the upper sleeve of naval uniforms to denote the wearer’s trade specialization and rank. The insignia reflects the structure and operational requirements of the wartime RCN and represents a key element in naval communications history from the 1939–1945 period.
