This pair of shoulder boards is from a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) officer’s greatcoat dating to the Second World War period. Constructed to be affixed to the shoulders of a standard-issue RCAF officer’s greatcoat, each board is made from blue wool consistent with RCAF uniform regulations of the era. The boards feature distinguishing rank insignia in the form of gold-colored braid, sewn onto the wool backing. Button attachments are present at the ends, allowing secure mounting on the coat. As issued to RCAF officers, these shoulder boards were a key indicator of rank and branch during service, playing both functional and ceremonial roles. Such insignia were part of the broader uniform system implemented by the Canadian armed forces throughout the Second World War, reflecting British Commonwealth influences in design and material. This set represents typical wartime manufacture and usage within the RCAF, offering insight into military uniform standards of the period.
