This item is a full-size group consisting of the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (CVSM) and the Defence Medal, awarded to Canadian service members for their contributions during the Second World War. The CVSM, instituted in 1943, was awarded to members of the Canadian armed forces who voluntarily served at least 18 months from 3 September 1939 to 1 March 1947. It features a silver circular design with a crowned effigy of King George VI on the obverse and a marching group of service personnel on the reverse. The Defence Medal, established in 1945, was granted to individuals serving in non-operational areas subjected to air attack or closely threatened, including within Canada and the United Kingdom. It is made of cupro-nickel with the image of King George VI and a reverse displaying a lion above a double-headed dragon. Both medals are mounted for wear and retain their original ribbons. This group represents typical Commonwealth military service recognition during World War II.
