This item is a World War II-era 1st Canadian Army canvas shoulder title insignia, intended to be sewn onto the uniform of Canadian military personnel. The insignia is a single piece constructed from khaki canvas.  Such shoulder titles were designed to identify the formation to which a soldier belonged and were worn on the upper sleeve of battledress blouses or jackets. The 1st Canadian Army served in Northwest Europe from 1944 to 1945, participating in major operations including the Normandy Campaign, the liberation of the Netherlands, and advances into Germany. Insignia like this example were issued to Canadian Army members attached to this formation, including both Canadian personnel and attached foreign units. The canvas construction and embroidery are consistent with the period production methods, and the practical, utilitarian design reflects wartime manufacturing standards. This shoulder title represents an authentic element of Canadian military uniform insignia from the Second World War.
