The WW1 Imperial German Prussian Helmet Plate, also known as a wappen, was an essential component of the pickelhaube helmet used by Prussian forces during the First World War. Manufactured from stamped metal, typically brass or a brass alloy, the plate features the iconic crowned Prussian eagle with outstretched wings, clutching sword and orb. The eagle is often detailed with a banner displaying the motto “Mit Gott für König und Vaterland” (With God, for King and Fatherland). Measuring approximately 15 cm by 13 cm, the plate was affixed to the front of the pickelhaube using wire loops or split pins. Helmet plates indicated the wearer’s allegiance and unit, forming a key part of German military uniform identification. The Prussian plate distinguished troops from other German states, whose helmet plates displayed different heraldic devices. Such plates reflect the organization, symbolism, and material culture of Imperial Germany during the First World War.
