The WW1 Imperial German Mounted Gendarmerie Spiked Helmet, known as a Pickelhaube, was part of the regulation dress for mounted police units in the German Empire during the First World War. Distinguished by its characteristic metal spike atop a black lacquered leather body, this helmet features a rounded visor and a squared rear neck guard. The front bears a stamped metal Prussian eagle plate, reflecting the wearer’s allegiance. Brass trim is commonly found along the front visor and spike base, with metal side rosettes securing the leather chinstrap. Interior fittings typically include a leather sweatband and occasionally a silk or cotton lining. These helmets were designed to provide a degree of protection while ensuring a formal, recognizable appearance for mounted gendarmerie on active and ceremonial duties. The spiked helmet style was gradually phased out as the war progressed, replaced by more practical designs better suited to the realities of modern combat.
