The WW1 Imperial German Hessian Button represents standard military uniform hardware issued to Hessian troops within the Imperial German Army during the First World War. Characterized by its metallic construction, the button typically features a plain domed surface, often stamped with “Hessen” or displaying state-specific insignia, in line with regional army distinctions within the Imperial system. These buttons were usually manufactured from brass or a brass-alloy, sometimes silvered or tinned, and measure approximately 22mm to 25mm in diameter. The reverse side often includes a looped shank for sewing onto tunics or greatcoats, and may bear a maker’s mark or manufacturing code.
