The WW1 Imperial German Field Artillery Kugelhelm is a distinctive helmet used by the Imperial German Army during the early years of the First World War. Characterized by its unique rounded shape and the prominent metal ball (kugel) finial atop the spike, this helmet served as the standard headgear for field artillery units. Constructed primarily from blackened leather with metal trim, the Kugelhelm typically features a brass front plate bearing the Prussian or provincial insignia, along with leather chinstraps and a removable metal spike fitted with the kugel tip for artillery service. Lined with leather or fabric for comfort, the design intended to provide a combination of protection and regimental identification. The Kugelhelm was gradually phased out in favor of the more protective steel Stahlhelm as trench warfare evolved. This helmet remains a notable example of Imperial German military equipment and reflects the transitional nature of combat gear during the early twentieth century.
