The WW1 Imperial German Black Wound Badge was instituted on March 3, 1918, by Kaiser Wilhelm II to honor soldiers of the German Empire wounded during the First World War. Awarded to military personnel who sustained one or two injuries due to hostile action, the badge is constructed from stamped sheet metal and finished with a matte black paint or lacquer. The design features an oval-shaped shield measuring approximately 42mm by 36mm, depicting a German Stahlhelm (steel helmet) over crossed swords, framed by a laurel wreath. The reverse typically includes a simple pin and clasp attachment mechanism. Produced by various manufacturers, the badge was worn on the lower left side of the uniform tunic. The black grade represents the first level of the wound badge distinction, with two higher grades—silver and gold—awarded for additional wounds or more severe injuries. The badge is an important artifact reflecting individual military service during the Great War.
