The WW1 Canadian CEF 2 Year Overseas Service Stripe is an original piece of military insignia awarded to personnel of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Instituted in 1917, the service stripe—also known as a “chevron”—was worn on the lower right sleeve of the uniform to denote two years of overseas service. Made from khaki worsted cloth, this insignia takes the form of a narrow angled strip, sewn directly onto the uniform. Each additional year of service was represented by the addition of an extra stripe. The service stripe recognized the commitment and endurance of Canadian soldiers serving abroad, most commonly on the Western Front. Examples like this reflect the standards of military dress and the recognition system of the Canadian military during the period. This artifact would be relevant for collectors, historians, or institutions focused on Canadian military history and the broader context of WW1.
