The WW1 British BEF Officer’s Putties Maker Fox are original lower leg wraps issued to officers of the British Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Manufactured by Fox, a recognized supplier of military accoutrements, these putties are made from tightly woven khaki wool and are designed to be wrapped spirally from the ankle to just below the knee. The putties protected the lower legs from mud, debris, and wear, as well as providing additional support for marching troops. Officer’s putties often featured somewhat finer material and higher quality stitching compared to those issued to enlisted ranks. The set typically includes a pair with attached ties or tapes for secure fastening. Putties were standard equipment for British and Commonwealth forces on the Western Front from 1914 onwards. This item reflects common field dress of BEF officers and would have been a visible part of service uniform throughout the conflict.
