This is a large size tunic button originating from the British Expeditionary Force’s Machine Gun Corps during the First World War. The Machine Gun Corps, established in 1915, played a crucial role in providing organized machine gun support to British and Commonwealth units on the Western Front and other theaters. The button is made of metal with a typically domed profile and features the distinctive insignia of the Machine Gun Corps: crossed Vickers machine guns surmounted by a crown and usually framed by a surrounding motto or decorative border. Buttons of this type were affixed to the Service Dress tunic, denoting the wearer’s unit affiliation. Such artifacts are associated with enlisted men and sometimes non-commissioned officers. Measuring approximately 25 mm in diameter, this style and size conforms to standard-issue British Army uniform regulations of the era. Surviving examples reflect period manufacturing techniques and official military specifications used during the First World War.
