The US Army M1 Carbine Bayonet, designated M4, was developed during World War II to complement the widely issued M1 Carbine. The M4 bayonet features a 6.75-inch spear point blade and a handle composed of stacked leather washers, ending in a cast steel pommel. A single crossguard with a muzzle ring is designed to fit securely onto the M1 Carbine’s barrel. The included M8 scabbard is constructed of olive drab fiberglass with a steel throat, designed for durability and ease of carry. Initially issued with a simple belt loop, later versions of the scabbard added a metal belt hook for improved attachment to web gear. The M4 bayonet and M8 scabbard remained in use through the Korean War and were adopted by several other armed forces worldwide. This combination represents a standard-issue edged weapon set for US military personnel in the mid-20th century.
