The East German Army Grey Wedge Cap is a standard-issue headgear item used by personnel of the National People’s Army (Nationale Volksarmee, NVA) of the German Democratic Republic. Characterized by its practical wedge-shaped design, this cap is constructed from grey wool-blend fabric and typically features a cotton or synthetic lining for comfort. Most examples display the NVA’s distinctive roundel insignia on the front—often consisting of a red, black, and gold cockade with a wreath emblem—affixed above a corresponding grey or silver piping, depending on rank and service branch. Designed for ease of storage, the wedge cap can be folded flat when not in use. Issued throughout the Cold War era, it was widely worn by enlisted ranks as part of both dress and field uniforms. The cap reflects the utilitarian approach of East German military uniform design and is representative of 20th-century Warsaw Pact headgear.
