British RN Navy Edward the 7th Midshipman’s Dirk

The British Royal Navy Edward VII Midshipman’s Dirk is a ceremonial dagger issued to midshipmen during the reign of King Edward VII (1901–1910). This dirk features a straight, single-edged steel blade, typically measuring around 18 inches in length. The hilt consists of a gilt brass crossguard with fouled anchor motifs, a white ray skin grip bound with twisted brass wire, and a distinctive pommel often decorated with naval insignia. The dirk is usually accompanied by a leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts. Such dirks were part of the full dress uniform for midshipmen and served as symbols of rank and service rather than combat weapons. The Edward VII cypher, present on some examples, helps to date the dirk specifically to this period.
