The WW1 Imperial German Mutze Cockade is a historical military insignia used during the First World War by German forces. This small, circular emblem was typically affixed to the front of the traditional field cap, known as the “Mutze,” worn by enlisted men and non-commissioned officers in the Imperial German Army. The cockade usually consists of concentric rings in the national colors of the German Empire—black, white, and red. These insignia served as a visible means of identifying national and sometimes state affiliation within the multi-state structure of the German Empire. Made from metal, with a crimped or pressed design, the cockade was attached using integral prongs or a central split pin on the reverse side. The use of the Mutze cockade was regulated by military uniform standards during the conflict and is a notable symbol of German military dress from the period 1914–1918.
