The WW2 German Mothers Cross in Bronze was an award introduced by the Third Reich on 16 December 1938, formally known as the Cross of Honour of the German Mother (Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter). This bronze variant was presented to mothers who had four or five children, recognizing their role in promoting population growth in accordance with Nazi social policy. The award is shaped as a blue-enameled cross edged in white, featuring a central medallion with the inscription “Der Deutschen Mutter” (To the German Mother) over a black swastika. The reverse side is typically marked with the date “16 Dezember 1938.” The cross comes suspended from a ribbon of blue with white stripes and was intended to be worn around the neck. Issued in three levels—bronze, silver, and gold—each color reflected the number of children in a recipient’s care. This piece illustrates a unique aspect of social awards during the period.
