Imperial German 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War Non-Combatant Commemorative Medal

The Imperial German 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War Non-Combatant Commemorative Medal was instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1871. It was awarded to civilians and military personnel who contributed to the war effort without engaging in direct combat during the Franco-Prussian War. The medal is struck in bronze and features a laurel-crowned portrait of Wilhelm I on the obverse, surrounded by the inscription “Wilhelm Deutscher Kaiser König v. Preussen.” The reverse bears the dates 1870–1871 within an oak leaf wreath and the phrase “Dem siegreichen Heere,” which translates to “To the victorious army.” The non-combatant version is distinguished by its black and white ribbon, in contrast to the combatant version’s black and red ribbon. These medals were officially issued and recognized as part of Imperial German military decorations commemorating service during the unification conflict that led to the establishment of the German Empire.
