The WW2 Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (CVSM) Ribbon Bar represents the ribbon worn by eligible members of Canada’s armed forces during the Second World War. Instituted in 1943, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal was awarded to military personnel who voluntarily served on Active Service, in any theatre, for at least 18 months between September 3, 1939, and March 1, 1947. The ribbon bar is rendered in a horizontal pattern with five vertical stripes: dark blue, red, light blue, yellow, and green, reflecting the colors of the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Air Force, and supporting services. Ribbon bars were intended for everyday wear on uniforms as an alternative to the full-sized medal, providing clear identification of a recipient’s qualification for the honour. Original period bars are a standard collectible item and are significant within Canadian military history collections for representing wartime service and recognition of volunteer commitment during World War II.
