The French Army Gras Bayonet 1883 Dated is an original edged weapon designed for use with the Modèle 1874 Gras rifle, the primary French service rifle during the late 19th century. This bayonet features a fullered blade, typically measuring approximately 520 mm in length, with a distinctive T-shaped cross-section intended for both strength and penetration. The hilt is composed of a brass pommel and a spring catch mechanism, facilitating secure attachment to the rifle. The steel crossguard is stamped with a muzzle ring and often marked with the model designation and year of manufacture. The included scabbard is constructed of blued steel. Bayonets marked with an 1883 date represent production or acceptance during that year, reflecting France’s continued use and adaptation of the Gras rifle system post-Franco-Prussian War. Such bayonets were standard issue through the late 1800s until their gradual replacement by newer models, including the Lebel bayonet.
