This is a pair of original World War I Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) 245th Battalion Grenadier Guards of Canada shoulder titles insignia. The 245th Battalion was authorized in 1916 and recruited in Montreal, Quebec, drawing personnel from the Grenadier Guards of Canada, one of the country’s oldest militia regiments. These metal shoulder titles were worn on the uniform epaulettes to identify the wearer’s unit. Each insignia is constructed from brass with the unit designation “245 CEF” above “CANADA,” reflecting standard British Commonwealth military insignia design of the era. The titles served both a functional and organizational role within the Canadian Army during the First World War, assisting with unit identification and esprit de corps. The 245th Battalion embarked for Britain later in the war, where it was ultimately absorbed to provide reinforcements for the Canadian Corps. This insignia pair represents a piece of Canadian military heritage from the Great War period.
