The WW1 British BEF #5 Mills Bomb, dated 1916, is an iconic example of early 20th-century military ordnance. Widely issued to British and Commonwealth forces during the First World War, the No. 5 Mills Bomb represents the first widely adopted British fragmentation hand grenade. Designed by William Mills in 1915, the grenade features a cast iron body with a grooved surface intended to enhance grip and fragmentation upon detonation. The #5 model was standardized for service use and proven effective in the trench warfare conditions common to the Western Front. This inert example, dated 1916, displays its original segmented body and retains evidence of the original manufacturer’s markings. The pin and lever mechanisms are present but permanently disabled, rendering it completely safe for display purposes. Such items are commonly collected for their historical association with the British Expeditionary Force and their role in the development of military technology during World War I.
