The US Army Vietnam China Plate Fragmentation Vest is a personal protective item issued to American forces during the Vietnam War. Developed in response to the increased threat from shell fragments and shrapnel, this vest features layered ballistic nylon construction reinforced by hard ceramic “China plates” inserted in the front and back panels. The design was intended to protect the torso from fragmentation and low-velocity projectiles encountered in combat scenarios. Adjustable side closures and shoulder straps allowed for a customized fit over standard field uniforms. The vest is characterized by its olive drab coloration and multiple attachment points for gear or equipment. While providing a significant improvement in personal protection compared to earlier models, the China Plate Fragmentation Vest was relatively heavy and primarily reserved for personnel at higher risk of exposure to explosive hazards, such as vehicle crews and infantrymen on patrol. It remains a notable example of mid-20th-century military body armor technology.
