The War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords was instituted by Nazi Germany on 18 October 1939 as a military decoration awarded for outstanding service not directly involving combat. The presence of swords signifies that the recipient performed acts of merit under conditions of direct enemy contact or in combat-related situations. This full-size example, produced during the Second World War, is of the type issued without a maker’s mark. The cross is constructed in a traditional Maltese style, composed of a zinc alloy with a bronze finish, and features a swastika at the center, framed by crossed swords between the arms. The reverse is plain, with no identifying insignia or manufacturer’s stamp. Accompanied by its original ribbon, the award measures approximately 48mm by 48mm. The War Merit Cross was widely bestowed upon both military and civilian personnel in recognition of valuable contributions to the war effort, particularly those beyond the scope of frontline combat.
