The Canadian Cavalry 1890 Pattern Troopers Sword with Scabbard is a standard issue edged weapon used by Canadian mounted units in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This example retains its original metal scabbard and is marked “FGH,” indicating regimental association or an inspector’s stamp, typical of military equipment issued during the period. The sword features a single-edged blade with a pronounced curve, designed for effective use on horseback. The steel bowl guard and ribbed grip provide secure handling and protection for the user’s hand. Measuring approximately 35 inches in overall length, this pattern was influenced by British cavalry swords, reflecting Canada’s ties to British military traditions of the era. The scabbard is manufactured from steel for durability in field conditions and includes two hanging rings for attachment to a trooper’s belt or saddle. This pattern was largely phased out in favor of more modern designs by the start of the First World War.
