The East German Army Camouflage Rain Pattern Zeltbahn is a military-issued shelter quarter used by the Nationale Volksarmee (NVA) of the former German Democratic Republic. Manufactured primarily in the latter half of the 20th century, this Zeltbahn features the distinctive “Strichtarn” or rain pattern camouflage, composed of vertical green, brown, and grey lines designed to provide concealment in woodland and temperate environments. Constructed from durable, water-resistant canvas material, each Zeltbahn is traditionally equipped with reinforced metal eyelets and buttonholes along the edges, enabling it to be fastened to other shelter quarters or used as an individual poncho. Commonly used as part of field gear, these Zeltbahnen could serve multiple functions including a groundsheet, shelter, or improvised stretcher. The design reflects practical standards adopted by Warsaw Pact forces during the Cold War era, illustrating the utilitarian approach to NVA field equipment during its period of service.
