The US Army M5A1 Bayonet in M8A1 Scabbard, manufactured by Milpar, is a standard-issue edged weapon designed for use with the M1 Garand rifle. The M5A1 model was introduced in the mid-1950s as an upgrade to the original M5 bayonet, featuring improvements for easier use and maintenance. The bayonet is distinguished by its push-button release, parkerized finish, and grooved black plastic grips, offering both durability and secure handling. It has a spear-point blade measuring approximately 6.75 inches, optimized for close-quarters combat and utility purposes. The accompanying M8A1 scabbard is constructed of fiberglass with a steel throat and includes a web belt hanger for convenient attachment to standard equipment. Markings on the bayonet and scabbard identify the manufacturer and model. Milpar, one of the principal contractors, produced these bayonets during the 1950s and 1960s.
