The WW2 German SA Coffee-Can Hat Badge is an insignia associated with the Sturmabteilung (SA), the paramilitary wing of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. Commonly referred to as the “coffee-can” badge due to its distinctive round shape and pronounced rim, this badge was typically worn on the feldgrau (field grey) side cap or “Schiffchen” used by SA members. It generally features the SA monogram or insignia, which is often arranged in relief on a metal disc. The badge was manufactured from stamped metal, usually zinc or aluminum, and finished with a silver or dull grey coating. It was attached to headgear with prongs or pins on the reverse. The SA played a prominent role in pre-war Germany, and such badges are representative of the organization’s standard-issue regalia. The coffee-can hat badge remains a notable example of uniform insignia from the period 1930s to 1945.
